Mickelson emerged, two-putted for par, and finished the tournament 2 strokes ahead at 6-under.

Phil Mickelson Joining LIV

Mickelson expressed his support for Saudi-backed LIV Golf, despite referring to Saudi Arabians as "scary motherf***ers" involved in heinous acts. This led to the loss of sponsorship from Amstel Light and KPMG. He later announced a break from golf to prioritise family time, including missing the 2022 Masters Tournament. Additionally, he withdrew from the PGA Championship, a tournament he had previously won in 2021.

However, on June 6, 2022, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman revealed that Mickelson would participate in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series starting on June 9, 2022. Consequently, on the opening day of the LIV Golf Invitational London, Mickelson, along with 16 other current and former tour members, was suspended by the PGA Tour for partaking in a conflicting event without the tour's permission.
