Rory McIlroy is set to compete in the Irish Open, which will be hosted at Royal County Down in September.

In 2015, when the Irish Open was last held at the Newcastle links course, McIlroy did not make it past the initial rounds.

His only win at the Irish Open occurred at the K Club in 2016.

At 34, the winner of four major championships tied for 16th place at the K Club in 2023, with Vincent Norrman from Sweden edging out the competition by one stroke to secure his second DP World Tour title.

The upcoming Irish Open is scheduled for 12-15 September.

McIlroy has had a strong start to the 2024 season, retaining his title at the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday. This victory came after he was the runner-up to Tommy Fleetwood at the first Dubai Invitational the week before.

The last time Royal County Down hosted the tournament in 2015, Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen triumphed, winning over England's Eddie Pepperell and Austria's Bernd Wiesberger in a decisive play-off.
