In a landmark moment for the world of golf, ten-time LPGA major champion Annika Sorenstam has made history by becoming the very first LPGA professional to earn membership at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club. Chairman Fred Ridley officially confirmed this groundbreaking achievement, highlighting the significance of this milestone.
"I've known Annika for quite some time, and I think she is going to be a great addition to the club," Ridley expressed with enthusiasm on the announcement. "I can tell you, she can still play, and she was just a delight to be with."
This historic moment marks the ongoing evolution of Augusta National Golf Club, where women were not allowed membership until 2012. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore were the trailblazers as the first female members of the club, ushering in a new era of inclusivity.
Chairman Ridley underlined the importance of women members, noting, "We have a number of women members, and we have for quite a few years. I think it made us a better club, and they are an integral part of our culture."
Augusta National, initially established as a men's-only club in 1932, has been the revered host of The Masters since 1934. Two decades ago, women's rights activist Martha Burk, representing the National Council of Women's Organizations, led a demonstration and campaign to address the absence of women members at Augusta National, marking a turning point in its history.
Among the esteemed female members of Augusta National are Heidi Ueberroth, co-chairman of Pebble Beach Co., former USGA president Diana Murphy, former IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, and Ana Botin, executive chairman of the Santander Group.
Annika Sorenstam, at 53 years of age, boasts an impressive career with 97 professional tournament victories, including a remarkable 72 on the LPGA Tour. Her legacy includes ten major championships and a recent triumph in the 2021 US Senior Women's Open, showcasing her enduring skill and passion for the sport. Her membership at Augusta National is a testament to her remarkable achievements and contribution to the world of golf.
